Lancaster Mounted Police Horse Featured In Children's Book Dies Of Cushing's Disease

A beloved police horse featured in numerous magazines and a children's book, has died from Cushing's Disease, the Lancaster City Bureau of Police announced on Monday, April 8.

The Lancaster Mounted Police Horse, Liam, was a Clydesdale Hackney Cross born in Toronto in 2001, where he worked as a carriage horse before financial constraints lead the previous caretaker to part ways.

Liam joined the force in 2005 and was paired with Officer Eric Lukacs in 2007 through his retirement on April 29th, 2023. 

During his years in service he did the following according to the police:

"Participated in over 1,000 programs, and even supported other jurisdictions including Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Gettysburg, PA, Bethlehem City, PA Stamford, CT, and Rockland Co, NY."

He went on to be featured in national publications including a  children’s book all about him entitled “What Does a Police Horse Do?”

Over the last 11 months of his retirement, "Liam spent his days on a private 309-acre farm, sharing the vast space with seven other horses, including his herd mate and former coworker police horse 'Ozzy,'" the police explained. 

Liam passed away from on complications of Cushing's Disease on April 4th, 2024. 

"He was laid to rest on a private farm near the Lukacs residence. While we mourn his passing, Liam's memory will live on in our hearts forever. We ask that you keep Officer Lukacs and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult time," the police concluded.
